Macron ends his American tour “among friends” in New Orleans

The president concluded his state visit on Friday with a stopover in Louisiana, where there are 200,000 French speakers. There he met the boss of Twitter, Elon Musk.

Special Envoy to New Orleans

Emmanuel Macron has chosen New Orleans, the most French of American cities, to close his State visit to the United States, leaving aside for a moment the heavy files of the bilateral relationship for a final “between friends”.

“It was 1976 the last time, it’s been a long time”, he said Friday evening (in the night in France) to the Louisianans gathered to listen to him in the great hall of the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA). He was referring to the last visit of a French head of state, that of Valéry Giscard d’Estaing in 1976, himself following in the footsteps of Charles de Gaulle in 1960. Like them, President Macron was welcomed with warmth and enthusiasm, a parenthesis in the harshness of politics which he did not hesitate to take full advantage of.
