During a special vaccination campaign by the state of Lower Saxony, thousands of young people were vaccinated against Corona on Sunday. A total of 23 vaccination centers took part in the campaign.

Young people were vaccinated in Cuxhaven, Wittmund, Braunschweig, Goslar, Hanover and Helmstedt, among others. For this purpose, the country provided 27,000 doses of the vaccine from Biontech. It is the only vaccine that has so far been approved for children and adolescents in Germany. The prerequisite was that the parents agreed and were present at the vaccination. With the campaign, the state government wanted to give minors the chance to be vaccinated before the summer holidays that start next Thursday. The date for the second vaccination is August 29th.

Great demand – vaccination campaign for young people continues

However, there is no general recommendation from the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) for people aged 12 to 17, only for those with a particular risk. Due to the great demand, Lower Saxony wants to continue the vaccination campaign in the coming weeks. In Braunschweig there will be more than 1,000 additional appointments for children aged twelve and over from Wednesday to Friday.

Prime Minister Weil advocates vaccination

Also Prime Minister Stephan Weil (SPD) spoke out in favor of vaccinating 12 to 17 year olds. “I don’t like to imagine a situation where the elderly are vaccinated and the younger ones are not,” said Weil in a summer interview with the NDR in Lower Saxony. Ultimately, the parents would decide. But politics wanted to open up the possibility, so Weil. There are also many experts who, when asked whether they would have their child vaccinated, clearly answered “yes”. In many countries, it is mostly the young people who are also vaccinated.

Vaccination appointments are quickly booked out

In Lower Saxony, the vaccination appointments for people under the age of 18 were fully booked within a short time, said Health Minister Daniela Behrens (SPD). That is why she decided to keep this offer up in the coming weeks. The vaccination centers could continue to reserve part of their vaccination doses for the vaccination of children and adolescents and offer specific appointments.

Free choice of vaccination center

These vaccination appointments are only available via the country’s hotline at Telephone number (0800) 99 88 665 forgive. They can also be booked by people who do not live in the catchment area of the respective vaccination center.
