Almost a month after the state elections in Lower Saxony, the state SPD approved the red-green coalition agreement at a special party conference. The Greens will discuss the agreement on Sunday.
If the Greens also agree, as expected, the contract should be signed by both parties on Monday in Hanover. In his first term of office from 2013 to 2017, Prime Minister Stephan Weil (SPD) had governed with the Greens, followed by a grand coalition with the CDU.
Red-Green: Quick agreement after state elections
Earlier in the week, the two parties presented the results of their negotiations, which they had come to in a hurry. The SPD, the winner of the state elections a month ago, wants to govern with the Greens – and vice versa. Thus, voting within the parties was only a formal act.
Constitution of the state parliament on Tuesday
Next Tuesday, the constitutive session will take place in the state parliament in Hanover. The prime minister is elected. After the electoral success of the Social Democrats, Weil is to remain head of the state government for another legislative period. At least 74 yes votes from a total of 146 MPs are required for his re-election. The head of government then appoints the ministers to office.
SPD again clear winner in state elections
The SPD and the Greens together make up 81 of 146 MPs in the new state parliament, and the government majority is 74 seats. The SPD won 33.4 percent of the votes in the state elections. The CDU, which previously governed as a junior partner in a grand coalition with the SPD, came to 28.1 percent. With 14.5 percent, the Greens became the third strongest force ahead of the AfD, which reached 11 percent. FDP and left did not get into the state parliament.
