Lower Bavaria: Bird protectors save lost northern bald ibis “Cevapcici” – Bavaria

In the Bavarian Forest, bird protectors captured a very rare northern bald ibis that got lost while flying to warmer southern climes. The migratory bird called “Cevapcici” had mistakenly flown north along with other northern bald ibises from Austria instead of over the Alps to its winter territory in Tuscany, as the Regen district office announced on Friday.

Since the animal had been wandering around Ayrhof in the municipality of Kollnburg for days, residents became aware of the black-feathered bird with its long beak and notified the State Association for Bird Protection and the district office.

The obviously starving bird was captured and brought to Austria to the Konrad-Lorenz Research Center in Grünau. Northern bald ibises were long extinct in the wild, but are being reintroduced into the wild as part of several reintroduction projects in the Alps. This also enabled the rescued bird to be identified.
