Congested route networks, late trains and construction sites everywhere: only 60 percent of long-distance trains are on time. Passenger numbers are expected to double by 2030. The infrastructure is too dilapidated for a turnaround in traffic, there is a lack of routes and points in many places – and above all engineers to advance the expansion and conversion. “Calculations have shown that by 2030 around half of all engineering positions in the railway sector will have to be filled,” warns the Association of German Engineers (VDI): This means that at least 33,000 experts in all disciplines will be needed. “However, the transport industry currently ranks in the lower third in terms of an attractive salary,” according to the VDI.
