Local transport in Munich: No money and no staff for the traffic turnaround – Munich

New lines? none. The future projects for subways, trams and buses are about one billion euros more expensive. More than 100 drivers and mechanics are missing. On Tuesday alone, there were failures on 19 lines.

The turnaround in traffic in Munich is on the brink because of the exploding investment costs and the massive shortage of personnel in local public transport. In the past year alone, the construction costs for the major future projects of the Munich transport company MVG have increased by around one billion euros. In addition, the shortage of staff is becoming increasingly noticeable. According to the MVG website, a tram and 18 bus routes were down on Tuesday due to a lack of drivers. According to information from the SZ, MVG boss Ingo Wortmann is said to have spoken several times at a joint supervisory board meeting of Stadtwerke München as the parent company and MVG at the end of last week about the imminent failure of the traffic turnaround.
