UPDATE ON THE SITUATION IN UKRAINE

  • The European Union is examining this Wednesday the project to cap certain agricultural imports from Ukraine. Some countries, such as France, consider it insufficient and wish to extend these restrictions to wheat, after demands from farmers.
  • Poland’s Deputy Foreign Minister said Tuesday that NATO is considering the possibility of shooting down Russian missiles that approach the borders of the Atlantic Alliance. On Sunday, Poland reported a violation of its airspace.
  • Russian justice on Tuesday extended the pre-trial detention of American journalist Evan Gershkovich, imprisoned for almost a year. Accused of espionage, he will remain in prison until at least June 30, awaiting a trial or an exchange of prisoners.

On Tuesday, Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Andrzej Szejna told local radio RMF24 that “various concepts are being analyzed within NATO“since this incident,”including shooting down these missiles when they are very close to NATO borders“, of which Poland is a member.”But this could only be done with the agreement of the Ukrainian side and taking into account the international consequences.“, he added.

Warsaw deplored on Monday that the Russian ambassador to Poland ignored an official summons to the Polish Foreign Ministry following the missile incident. Poland then indicated that Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski had discussed the subject with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

During the telephone interview, this one “recalled that NATO had considerably increased its vigilance and strengthened its positions on the eastern flank of the Alliance, particularly in Poland“, a senior NATO official said on Tuesday.
