The abstention rate in the first round in previous presidential elections

The final abstention rate for this first round of the presidential election is estimated at 26.5% according to a projection by our partner Elabe for BFMTV, L’Express/RMC with SFR.

For comparison, here are first-round abstention rates in previous presidential elections:

• 19.98% in 2017
• 18.63% in 2012
• 14.67% in 2007
• 27.16% in 2002

The French shunned the ballot boxes. The final abstention rate for the first round of the presidential election at 8 p.m. is estimated at 26.5%, according to an Elabe projection and The Express produced for BFMTV with our partner SFR. This is more than in the first round in 2017: at the time, the final abstention rate was 22.23%. A level not seen since 2002 when it had reached 28.40%.

The participation rate at 5 p.m. at the highest in the Dordogne, Aveyron and in the Gers

The turnout at 5 p.m. was highest in the departments of Dordogne (75.26%), Aveyron (74.93%) and Gers (73.71%). Conversely, the departments of Haute-Corse (51.23%), Seine-Saint-Denis (51.71%) and Paris (52.17%) are those where voters went the least to the polls.

The turnout for this first round of the presidential election stood at 52.17% at 5 p.m. in Paris, a rate down twelve points compared to 2017 (64.51%).

Turnout stands at 65% at 5 p.m., the lowest since 2002

The turnout stood at 65% at 5 p.m. in the first round of the presidential election, according to the Interior Ministry. A figure down by almost 5 points compared to 2017 at the same time, and unheard of since the presidential election of 2002, where the participation rate was 58.45%. In the first round of the last presidential election, the turnout at 5 p.m. was 69.42%, compared to 70.59% in 2012.

No vote estimation, no results released before 8 p.m.

Who will be in the second round of the presidential election? If we are going to have a first estimate of the final abstention, it will however still be necessary to wait before knowing the first tendencies of the ballot – it is forbidden to disseminate indications before the closing of the last polling stations, at 8 p.m.

It is only then, and not before, that BFMTV will be able to reveal the first estimates of the Elabe Institute: here is how these figures are calculated.

25.48% participation at noon, three points less than in 2017

Participation in the first round of the presidential election on Sunday stood at 25.48% at 12 p.m., three points less than in 2017 (28.54%) and than in 2012 (28.3%), according to figures from the Ministry of the Interior. Turnout at noon was however four points higher than on 21st April 2002 (21.39%), a record year for abstention in a first round of presidential elections.

The first round still in progress, soon a first estimate of the final abstention

The vote for the first round of the presidential election continues everywhere in metropolitan France. You still have until 7 p.m. to vote if you have not yet cast a ballot in the ballot box, and even 8 p.m. in some municipalities.

We will know in a few minutes the figures for participation at 5 p.m., before a first estimate of the final abstention made by the Elabe Institute.
