In the run-up to the new Disney film, there were sometimes violent reactions: Arielle is played by a black leading actress.

Stars like Halle Bailey, Melissa McCarthy and Javier Bardem strolled across the blue carpet in Los Angeles on Tuesday night: the occasion was the Hollywood premiere of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid”.

This moment means everything to her, said the 23-year-old Bailey, who embodies Ariel in the film, on the sidelines of the premiere. It is an honor to play this “iconic role”. It is the singer’s first leading role. The strip will be in cinemas at the end of May.

The first trailer for the film with the black leading actress had caused discussions on the net. Bailey emphasized how encouraging the trailer was for many people. In fact, videos of excited kids who couldn’t believe their Disney heroine was black also went viral.

The cinematic remake of the fairy tale “The Little Mermaid” by Hans Christian Andersen was staged by director Rob Marshall (“Chicago”, “Mary Poppins’ Return”) as a live-action musical. The classic story about the tragic love of a mermaid for a human prince was reworked by Disney in 1989 as the cartoon “The Little Mermaid”.
