It would be nice if there were more German elder statesmen like Joschka Fischer. A retired Green Foreign Minister, a realist, someone purified by experience and pragmatism. He sits on the stage of the Klaus von Bismarck Hall in the WDR radio station, wearing jeans and sneakers with a jacket, of course, and says with that brooding, concentrated Fischer expression: “The miracle of Gorbachev made us Germans believe that everything was possible , also Kant’s eternal peace.
