Lifeless body found in apartment, probably there for three years

“It’s the misery of global isolation, a person who clearly had no family.” The words are signed by the public prosecutor of Montbéliard. They alone sum up the solitude in which the victim lived. This week, the lifeless body of a woman was discovered in an apartment in Montbéliard (Doubs), found The Republican East. The victim could have been dead for three years.

According to prosecutor Paul-Edouard Lallois, it was bailiffs who discovered the body when they forced the front door of the apartment. An intervention carried out as part of an eviction procedure, following unpaid rent for three years. The mailbox corresponding to the apartment was also full, with letters dating back to 2021, the magistrate said.

“No suspicion of criminal act”

An investigation into the causes of death has been opened. According to the first elements, there is “no suspicion of criminal act”, which the autopsy carried out on Friday will be able to confirm. There was apparently no odor emanating from the accommodation.

The body can be formally identified during the autopsy, but identity papers found on site suggest that it is a woman in her forties, who occupied the accommodation. A search for even a distant member of the family of the deceased is underway in order to be able to hand over the body and carry out a funeral. Otherwise, the body will be handed over to municipal services to be buried in a common grave.
