Leinster scrum-half Nick McCarthy comes out

For the first time on Monday, Nick McCarthy publicly spoke about his homosexuality, a rare thing in sport, and even more so in rugby. A big step for the Leinster scrum half, who had already come out to his teammates in January.

“I was obviously quite nervous, but I’m really happy to have done it,” he explains on his club’s website, confiding that he was affected by the situation for a long time. “I considered quitting rugby because I didn’t think I could come out while playing rugby. The 27-year-old, however, quickly received the support of his club, his coach Leo Cullen and his teammates.

“We are delighted that he can be himself, welcomed Jonathan Sexton. We talk a lot about watching over our brothers here and the last few months have been spent on that, watching over Nick. And it will continue. By speaking openly about his sexuality, Nick will be a role model to others and we couldn’t be more proud of him. »
