A huge sporting page is turning. Iconic New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick announced Thursday that he is leaving the Massachusetts franchise after 24 seasons in the NFL and six Super Bowl wins, all with King Tom Brady in his ranks.
“There are so many great memories and thoughts that come to mind when I think of the Patriots…I will always be a Patriot,” Belichick said during a news conference. “I can’t wait to get back here, but for now we’ll move on.” I’m excited for the future, but I’m very appreciative of the opportunity and support (received) here.”
Earlier, ESPN and other media announced the departure of the 71-year-old coach, who had one year remaining on his contract with New England. This was also confirmed by Patriots owner Robert Kraft. “We have mutually agreed to part ways amicably. I am very proud that our partnership has lasted 24 years. I don’t think there has been a joint adventure in the NFL that lasted longer and was as productive as ours. »
Retirement or new adventure?
Belichick won his first two Super Bowls in 1986 and 1990 as defensive coordinator for the New York Jets. But it was with New England that he wrote one of the most beautiful pages in the history of American sport: with former quarterback Tom Brady, whose mentor he was and who is considered the best player of all time, Belichick won six championship titles in 2002, 2004, 2005, 2017 and 2019. But since then, the Patriots had fallen into line.
No one seems to know now whether he will retire or coach another NFL team.
