Meta, Snap, Twitter, Stripe: A wave of layoffs is sweeping through Silicon Valley. It’s the first mini-bubble that bursts – and a message to the supposedly invulnerable bosses.

You can throw people out like Elon Musk. Without notice, Twitter’s new owner had many employees’ email and chat accounts suspended before they even found out they were leaving. You can throw people out like Patrick Collison, head of the San Francisco payment service provider Stripe. He sent an email pledged support to the more than 1,000 layoffs and explained the mistakes he and his leadership team made. Once styleless, once humble, in the end the same thing.
