Sandman : dreamlike or nightmarish epic?

Can Humanity survive without a dream? Apparently not. When Dream aka Morpheus aka Rêve (played by Tom Sturridge) is freed after seventy years of captivity, the kingdom of dreams is in decline. In a nightmarish atmosphere, the Eternal (nothing to do with Marvel characters) shaper of dreams must reconquer his kingdom, while recovering his powers of gods of dreams which have been stolen from him.

The first adaptation (after an aborted film project) of Neil Gaiman’s masterpiece that appeared on DC Comics’ Vertigo label (his fantasy label), this eleven-episode Netflix series aims to be a grand adaptation of the graphic novel. With a budget of 15 million dollars per episode, the platform wants to compete with the fantasy releases of House Of The Dragon and The Lord of the Rings with striking visuals. The very dark latest trailer features a few characters like Kirby How Well-Baptiste (Why Women Kill) who plays Death or Gwendoline Christie (Game Of Thrones) in Lucifer and especially the main antagonist of the series Boyd Holbrook who embodies the Corinthian, the nightmare created by Rêve.

Sandman summons in its latest visuals many references, Harry Potter to Tim Burton by the way Good Omens Where American Gods (already two adaptations of works by Neil Gaiman) and promises a dreamlike epic, fantastic but dangerous. Will the promise be kept? See you on August 5 on Netflix to find out.

She-Hulk: Lawyerchange at Marvel?

The Marvel Universe continues to expand on Disney+. After Miss Marvel, it’s She-Hulk’s turn to smash the small screen on August 17. A lawyer who inherits the powers of her cousin Bruce Banner alias Hulk, Jennifer Walters (played by Tatiana Maslany) will learn, faster than her male counterpart, to control her powers. In this humorous series, the newcomer to the MCU will have to combine the life of a superheroine, a lawyer and different “dates”.

Can we hope for a revival with this series? Let’s be optimistic, even if the recent Disney+ series are average (even mediocre, hello Obi-Wan Kenobi), the character of She-Hulk offers a lot of comedic possibilities that could make for a good comedy. That the detractors of “Marvel humor” reassure themselves, here the goal does not seem to defuse dramatic scenes with a schoolboy joke. She-Hulk has always had a very pronounced comedic edge to the comics and taking on that bent could make She-Hulk: Lawyer the MCU’s first true comedy. It remains to be seen whether Marvel will decide to explore the concept to the end or will settle for the bare minimum.

Return to Westeros on Dragonback

First spin-off of the cult series Game Of Thrones, House of the Dragon, arrives on August 21 on HBO and at OCS the next day in France. Announced rival of the future series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, this series will take fans back to the world of Georges RR Martin, but this time 200 years before the events of the series. No Daenerys, no Jon Snow, no Tyrion but a gallery of new characters to love (or hate, it’s still a series stamped Game Of Thrones).

No change of scenery to be expected, however, the plot is centered on the Targaryens and more precisely on the fall of their family. Taking place over approximately thirty years, the series will revolve around the death of King Viserys 1st (camped by Paddy Considine) and the ensuing fratricidal war of succession: the Dance of the Dragons. And flying reptiles, there should be more than in the original series, the trailer reveals some of them and with them some pretty spectacular action scenes. At the same time, with a budget of 200 million euros for 10 episodes, it’s the minimum…

Milly Alcock and Emma Darcy play Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen at different ages of her life in her battle against her uncle Daemon Targaryen played by the excellent Matt Smith. Three or four seasons would already be planned to cover the plot of the book Fire and Blood (written by Georges RR Martin). However, the start of season 2 will depend on the success of this first season.

There’s no crying in baseball!

Homerun against sexism and racism? Series A League of Their Own from Prime Video looks back at the creation of a women’s baseball league in the 1940s. If the title may sound familiar, it is. The series is a free adaptation of the film A League of Their Own from 1992, directed by the late Penny Marshall. Dottie (camped by Greena Davis) and her team coached by Tom Hanks competed in the first women’s baseball league created during the Second World War when, lacking players because the men were fighting in Europe, the men’s league was in danger of stopping.

The series therefore uses the same elements but the characters differ (it is possible to hope for appearances from the original cast) and some themes as well. According to creators Will Graham and Abbi Jacobson, it’s about taking a “closer look at issues of racism and sexism, following the journey of a new cast of characters as they forge their own paths onto the pitch.” , both in the league and in the city…”

Abbi Jacobson and Chanté Adams will be the stars of the show, accompanied by their team made up of D’Arcy Carden, Gbemisola Ikumelo and Roberta Colindrez, among others. The eight episodes of this series will be available from August 12.
