The action caused six-figure damage and a lot of controversy – and is now being heard in court. Two climate activists from the last generation have to answer for the color attack on the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin.

After The first climate activists are on trial in Berlin this Tuesday (11 a.m.) following the color attack on the Brandenburg Gate around six months ago. The two defendants, aged 20 and 21, are accused of criminal damage to property. They are said to have been involved with twelve other members of the Last Generation climate group in the action on September 17, 2023, during which the symbolic landmark was sprayed with orange-yellow paint. According to the prosecution, cleaning costs of around 55,000 euros were initially incurred after the attack. The estimated total damage is said to be 115,000 euros.

Seven witnesses in the Last Generation trial

Due to the young age of the climate activists, the trial will take place before a juvenile judge at the Tiergarten district court. In your case, youth law could still apply. So far, one day of trial has been planned for the trial, so that the verdict could be handed down on the same day. According to court information, seven witnesses have been summoned.

The cleaning work on the gate was complex. According to the Senate Finance Administration, the state of Berlin is demanding around 142,000 euros from the climate activists in an additional civil lawsuit. It is still unclear when the Berlin Regional Court will hear this matter.
