The JVA Landsberg is probably the most famous prison in Bavaria. Because of prominent inmates like Alfons Schuhbeck and Uli Hoeneß – and because of its eventful history before, during and after National Socialism.
The uproar this time, with Alfons Schuhbeck, wasn’t that great. Of course it’s exciting when the “celebrity chef” has to go to prison for tax evasion. And of course there were loud laughs when the Landsberg prison advertised a job for a cook shortly before he was due to start prison. But back then, nine years ago, when Uli Hoeneß arrived, everything was even crazier. “It was annoying at times,” says Monika Groß, the head of the correctional facility. Photographers and reporters besieged the area, harassing employees and not caring about the “No Trespassing” signs. So Groß had new ones made back then, bigger ones. “The little ones apparently weren’t seen that way.”
