BerlinAfter criticism from economic researchers of the new regulation for midi jobs, Minister of Labor Hubertus Heil (SPD) wants to review the relevant regulations. “We’ll take a close look at that,” said Heil in Berlin. “When there is a need for correction, it is always necessary.” Midi jobs are jobs with a monthly wage between 520 and 2000 euros, employees in this area only pay reduced social security contributions, but later receive a pension as if they had paid in full. A study by the German Institute for Economic Research came to the conclusion that the regulation, which has been in force since January 1st and costs almost one billion euros per year, is expensive but not very accurate because many employees with higher incomes also benefit. The researchers are calling for the basic pension to be expanded instead. It supports people who have been employed for decades but still only have a small pension.
