Former police officer Derek Chauvin was attacked with a knife in prison and seriously injured. Several US media reported this on Friday evening, citing people familiar with the matter. The Bureau of Prisons said an inmate was attacked at the Tucson prison. The authority states on its website that visits to the prison are currently not possible. CNN sources and the New York Times according to it was Chauvin. According to the authority, prison staff carried out life-saving measures and the person requiring treatment was then taken to a hospital.
No further details were given about the inmate’s condition, but one of the people familiar with the incident said loudly New York Timesthat Chauvin survived the attack. He is in a stable condition, it said. No employees were injured in the incident.
Chauvin was sentenced to a long prison sentence in 2021 for the murder of African American George Floyd. In May 2020, Floyd died in a brutal police operation in Minneapolis. Videos documented how police officers pushed the unarmed man to the ground.
