According to Bavaria’s Minister of the Interior, there are some indications that the knife attack in Würzburg could have been an Islamist-motivated act. First, however, further investigations are necessary.
Bavaria’s Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann sees a “blatant suspicion” of an Islamist background to the knife attack in Würzburg. “In view of what we have found, there is a lot to suggest that it could be an Islamist-motivated act,” said Herrmann on Sunday evening “Bild”.
During the search of the 24-year-old Somali’s accommodation, something was found that could indicate Islamist propaganda material. In addition, the suspect himself spoke of his “contribution to jihad”. But now we have to wait for the further investigations, especially the evaluation of two cell phones.
Hate messages found
The man stabbed three women and injured seven people on Friday, five of whom were life-threatening. He is now on remand. It is unclear to what extent the psyche of the repeatedly psychologically conspicuous man played a role and whether Islamist attitudes could have contributed to the crime.
Investigators had found material in the homeless shelter in which the man lived, which is said to contain hate messages. It was secured. For the evaluation, the documents must first be translated, as well as messages on cell phones. Herrmann also spoke out in favor of a review of refugee law.
