Kirill Serebrennikov directs Munich Opera from Moscow – culture

Kirill Serebrennikow is world famous as a filmmaker, opera and theater director. But a show trial made him famous far beyond the art scene: In August 2017, Serebrennikov was indicted and convicted in Moscow for allegedly embezzling state grants. He was put on an electronic ankle cuff for 20 months, and he spent that time under house arrest with strict no-contact rules. He was sentenced to six years in a camp last year downgraded to a three-year suspended sentence and fine. While under house arrest he was allowed to continue working, he staged operas from a distance and made the film “Leto”, which was invited to the Cannes film festival.
