The last visible relic of the old Kiel coal-fired power plant has disappeared since midday today: According to the community power plant, the chimney was blown up.
The dismantling of the disused power plant on Kiel’s eastern bank began two years ago. It had supplied the state capital with energy for almost 50 years. Now everything has been blown up and disappeared. On Friday afternoon at 1:31 p.m., the 134-meter-high chimney, the last remnant of the power plant, went down with a bang in a cloud of dust.
Safety radius of 200 meters
According to information from power plant managing director Matthias Brock, a safety radius of 200 meters had been set up in advance for the explosion. The immediate residents had been notified with leaflets. The construction site is located at Hasselfelde 40 in the Dietrichsdorf district of Kiel – directly on the Kiel Fjord.
Mishaps in previous blasts
It was only in July The third blast succeeded in destroying the power plant’s boiler house to such an extent that the rubble could be cleared away. There had already been a breakdown during an explosion in April. At that time, a piece of metal about the size of a plate smashed into a house that was a good kilometer away from the power plant. Nobody got hurt.
Modern gas power plant has been in use for four years
The hard coal power plant has not been in operation since 2019. It was replaced by the modern coastal power station. 20 gas engines can be controlled in the system as required. The Kiel municipal utilities announced in March that the coastal power plant would be the world’s first large-engine cogeneration plant to be converted to run on green hydrogen in twelve years.
