Karlsfeld: Old Bayernwerkstrasse becomes bicycle route – Dachau

On the way to becoming a bicycle-friendly municipality, Karlsfeld dares to move forward: the first bicycle street is now to be set up in the village. The Environment Committee decided on Wednesday. Bicycle expert Franz Trinkl (SPD) had applied to check whether there was a safe bicycle connection between Dachau-Süd and Karlsfeld-West. If you can identify one of these, switching to bicycles could be more attractive, especially for commuters, he pointed out. For a long time he has been annoyed that the Fahrradstraße in Dachau-Süd (Joseph-Effner-Straße) ends abruptly at the city limits. “It has to be continued, of course,” he demanded a year ago.

Most cyclists currently use the Alte Bayernwerkstraße to drive to the new one. It is the shortest route from Dachau-Süd to MAN. But according to Trinkl it is “life-threatening” as many motorists see a secret route here. The road is so narrow that two oncoming cars can hardly pass each other. Cyclists are overtaken with an extremely short distance and relatively high speed – 50 kilometers per hour are allowed. In addition, the sand banquets are holey and washed out in many places. Cyclists who get in there could easily fall, says Trinkl. So that they no longer have to drive there, the bicycle consultant suggested in his application that existing dirt roads be expanded in the adjacent field. This would also be an abbreviation.

The Karlsfeld traffic expert Günther Rustler countered this idea that it would be necessary to cross under the B 471 – an expensive matter. In addition, the community is not in full possession of the field. Only 300 meters belonged to her. 1300 would have to buy it. “That should fail because of the costs,” said Rustler. As an alternative, he recommended taking the cyclists along Moosstrasse and Alte Bayernwerkstrasse. Before the summer holidays, the municipality commissioned a traffic census: After that, 165 cyclists and 1,400 cars were on the route every day on 23 days. “If you turn the Alte Bayernwerkstrasse into a bicycle street, motor vehicle traffic would be significantly weakened,” said Rustler. “It would be a significant improvement in security.”

The municipal councils agreed in unison. “The bicycle road would be a good way to get to school for high school students,” said traffic officer Bernd Wanka (CSU). Incidentally, you could set a speed limit of 30 on the Alte Bayernwerkstrasse. This would mean that the secret route would no longer be attractive. Wanka already asked that the speed limit be monitored. “Otherwise we won’t get those from the street that we don’t want.” Trinkl welcomed the Fahrradstraße as an “important building block” if you wanted to get more people on their bikes. Incidentally, Alte Bayernwerkstrasse is not the only one to be rededicated as Fahrradstrasse. For a long time now, people have been thinking of making the Lärchenweg a bicycle road, too, reports Wanka. And in the bicycle traffic concept, the planners have further suggestions, which, however, first have to be discussed in the committees.

To improve safety for cyclists who are out early in the morning or in the evening, the municipality now also wants to take care of lighting between Münchner Straße and Am Burgfrieden. The CSU had made a corresponding request. In view of the precarious financial situation of the community, Wanka suggested that this should be “subject to financial reserve”. Nevertheless, an offer should be obtained so that you know how much money you would need for it during the household consultations.
