For months, residents in villages near Cherson have lived in fear of daily shelling. Now they also have to flee from floods. The water has been rising since the Kakhovka dam broke – people on both sides of the Dnieper River have to be brought to safety.
The people living in the villages not far from the small town of Beryslav suffered a lot during the war. Russian troops occupied the towns just a few days after the start of the war. After the liberation last November, the front shifted to the immediate vicinity. Since then, Russian troops have been shelling the area daily from the southern bank of the Dnieper River with artillery, mortars, and sometimes even machine guns. At the end of May, bombs fell on the villages from the air, killing two people. In early June, three were injured when a bakery in the small town of Beryslav was hit. On Tuesday morning, the water came to the devastated area.
