Massimiliano Allegri returned to the Juventus coaching bench in the summer. But it could have turned out very differently, as he now admitted.

Massimiliano Allegri, Juventus coach, has reported that he already reached an agreement with Real Madrid ahead of the season. “I signed with them last summer,” he said GQ.

However, Allegri changed his mind when Juve approached him again and convinced him to return to Turin. “I then called the president and told him I wasn’t coming because I had chosen Juventus,” the coach said of a phone call with Real boss Florentino Perez. “He thanked me,” he made clear that the Madrilenians weren’t too upset about Allegri’s change of heart.

Allegri return after failed Juve experiments

During his first tenure at Turin, which lasted five years, Allegri won five titles with the Bianconeri. After failed attempts with Maurizio Sarri and Andrea Pirlo as Juve coach, he returned in the summer of 2021. “I could have done it earlier, but I didn’t do it for personal reasons,” Allegri said.

After a poor start to the season, Juventus is currently in top form: The Bianconeri haven’t lost any of their last 16 league games and will play the reigning champions Inter Milan in a top duel on Sunday.
