Update, 4:10 p.m.: Judge Juan Merchan has made a first verdict against Donald Trump: The former US president must pay a total of $9,000 in fines for nine violations of the court-ordered news blackout. Trump had criticized likely witnesses in the trial. Merchan also threatened the ex-president with imprisonment if he violated the “gag order” again.
Update, 3:38 p.m.: Donald Trump is CNN According to him, he has now arrived in the courtroom and first speaks to his son Eric. First report from April 30, 2024: New York – After a day of rest, negotiations will begin again in the “Big Apple” today. For Donald Trump at the trial in New York, that means: attendance in the courtroom, no time for the election campaign and, in the worst case, another fine.
The decision is likely to be made this week as to whether Donald Trump’s statements violated the news blackout that Judge Juan Merchan had imposed on him for the duration of the trial in New York. Judge Juan Merchan announced a decision on Thursday on the prosecution’s accusation that Trump ignored the so-called “gag order” at least 14 times.
Trump must be present at the trial in New York
Until then, the court will continue proceedings in New York for two more days. Donald Trump must be present, as with all scheduled court dates until a possible verdict. This limits the Republican candidate’s ability to campaign for the 2024 US election due in November.

- It followed Rhona Graffwho worked in the Trump Organization for several decades and according to USA Today was considered “Trump’s right-hand man”. She confirmed in court in New York that the defendant was said to have had contact with Stormy Daniels on several occasions.
- The third witness who began his testimony is Gary Farro. As an employee of First Republic Bank, Farro was involved in processing the hush money payment to Stormy Daniels. He will continue his testimony on Tuesday (April 30).
Numerous other witnesses are expected as the trial progresses. These include experts in campaign finance and tax law as well as other former employees of the Trump Organization. But the statements from former companions of the ex-president are likely to be more piquant.
- Michael Cohen: Trump’s ex-lawyer is now considered one of his biggest opponents. He handled his former client’s hush money payments and is expected to provide some details about it on the witness stand.
- Karen McDougal: The former Playmate had an affair with Trump that lasted several months.
- Stormy Daniels: The erotic actress and her affair with Trump are at the center of the entire trial. Your statement is considered almost certain.
- Hope Hiccup: The former employee of Trump’s campaign team also followed her boss to the White House. The 35-year-old former model was also involved in the hush money payments.
Will Donald Trump appear as a witness in the trial against himself?
It remains unclear whether Donald Trump himself will take the witness stand in New York. If the public prosecutor calls him, he could probably make use of his right to refuse to testify. The same applies to his wife, Melania Trump, who was heavily pregnant with their only child, Barron Trump, during Trump’s affairs with McDougal and Daniels.
Trump is charged in New York in 34 cases. However, he is said to have committed a criminal offense not because of the payment of hush money, but because he had falsified business reports in order to cover up the payments. Trump is also said to have violated campaign finance laws by concealing the payments. In addition, in the eyes of the prosecution, the payments represent illegal attempts to influence elections.
The trial against Trump will last several weeks. A verdict is expected no earlier than May 31st and no later than June 14th.
