The writer and dramaturg John von Düffel will be the new director of the ETA Hoffmann Theater in Bamberg in the summer of 2025. The Upper Franconian city announced this on Thursday. The 57-year-old, who has never directed a theater before, will succeed Sibylle Broll-Pape, who will be leaving in 2025 after ten years as director. The city council rejected their request for a two-year contract extension in March. According to the city, 68 individuals and teams applied for the management position for the Bamberg Theater. After reviewing and pre-reading by a search committee of around 20 people, the city council’s decision on Wednesday evening fell on John von Düffel, who is quoted as saying: “I want to reconcile the local with the national, just as I want to reconcile entertainment with the serious.”
