“Men can give a lot of joy but also be the source of a lot of trouble,” says Jessie Buckley at 20 minutes. The actress of course echoes the misadventures that await the heroine of Menan excellent thriller by Alex Garland which she came to present with her partner Rory Kinnear in the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs at the Cannes Film Festival.
“My character was traumatized by a terrible event involving her husband, insists the actress seen recently in The Lost Daughter by Rebecca Hall. She thinks she will find peace by taking refuge in an isolated cottage in the English countryside, but she is not at the end of her surprises. ” It’s the least we can say ! The director ofEx Machina (2014) does not spare this young woman tortured by a terrible feeling of guilt.
Several shades of Rory
“And that’s where I come in,” adds Rory Kinnear. I’m going to ruin his life any way I can which was great fun to create! The actor embodies all the “Men” of this chilling thriller and it would be a shame to give details of his various performances. “I had invented biographies for each of these guys,” he recalls. It was exciting to change my look with each new composition, especially when I had to embody several in the same day. The viewer does not always recognize Rory Kinnear in his various guises, which reinforces the unease that emerges from each of the roles he plays.
“The fact that he interprets all these characters helped me a lot to feel the paranoia that is gradually taking hold of mine, recognizes Jessie Buckley. It was really as if all these men were siding with the heroine’s deceased husband to persecute her. A superb house and a small village nestled in verdant nature imprison this solitary woman. The discovery of strange and particularly violent legends leads her to an ever deeper madness.
“These types of psychological horror films don’t need gore to be effective. It is enough for him to be anchored in the daily newspaper to anguish the public , declares the actress. The “Men” that the heroine encounters are enough to permanently populate the nightmares of the spectator who lets himself be drawn into this strange tale. We don’t soon forget them.
