“The rebels have never been for violence.” Jean-Luc Mélenchon replied to his detractors on Friday June 30 by calling “especially the younger ones” To “do not touch” to schools or libraries, after three nights of riots in France. Since Tuesday, the Insoumis have been under heavy fire from the presidential camp, the right and the far right, who accuse them of not condemning the riots and violence strongly enough, following the death of young Nahel, killed by a policeman during a traffic check.

The Keeper of the Seals Eric Dupond-Moretti had thus taxed them with “moral accomplices of the abuses that are committed”. Jean-Luc Mélenchon counter-attacked in two stages. “The rantings against LFI will not hide the responsibility of those who created this situation”he launched at noon on Twitter. “Safe escalation leads to disaster”, he was indignant. A reference to the increased deployment of law enforcement overnight from Thursday to Friday, and to the statements of the executive who said he was ready to adapt the law enforcement system “without taboo”.

“Our common good”

“Hear the popular demand. Respect it. Justice emergency plan everywhere”, also proclaimed the rebellious leader. More solemn in the evening, he nevertheless intervened in a video to address “notably” to “younger”. “The school, we must not touch it, the library, the gymnasium, everything that belongs to all of us, which is our common good”.

Divergences had appeared within the left in the way of appeasing the climate of tension. If the first secretary of the PS Olivier Faure said, in a video, “To fully understand the anger that is expressed” In “neglected territories, despised by the Republic”he at the same time “solemnly called for a return to calm”. “I call on all the elected representatives of Nupes to call for the return of civil peace”added the deputy of Seine-et-Marne, in a declaration addressed in particular to the Insoumis.
