Jean-François Copé opposes a primary on the right

The method of deciding between candidates wishing to run for the presidential election of 2022 continues to crystallize the debates on the right. In turn, Jean-François Copé (LR) displayed his convictions on the issue this weekend. And the former minister is up against a primary of his camp. It is even according to him “a dangerous idea”, in an interview with Sunday newspaper.

“To think that it is through the primary that we will solve the problem is to have forgotten everything about the ravages of the past. The primaries are processes of fratricidal destruction, ”considers the one who was an unsuccessful candidate for the right-wing primary of 2016 where he had collected 0.3% of the vote. He therefore believes that this primary is “a trap”, on which he alerted Valérie Pécresse. “The theme of the campaign will be to say to LR activists who will be the heart of the electorate: ‘Vote for someone who has stayed with us.’ It will automatically benefit Laurent Wauquiez ”.

“The theater of ruthless struggles”

“And even more serious, Xavier Bertrand, who is leading in the polls, said he would not participate in the primary. The party is not in a position to impose it on him. We are writing the worst case scenario, ”he said. “This primary will be the scene of ruthless struggles between stables”, still deplores Jean-François Cope.

For him, the fact that there is no consensus around a candidate is “the alibi to justify the unjustifiable”. “Let’s wait for the fall, and we’ll see what the situation will be,” he recommends, inviting us to focus on the project first. The consensus may be difficult to find for the President of the Republicans, Christian Jacob.
