Jan Böhmermann has (once again) taken on the Austrian FPÖ. Almost five years after the Ibiza affair, the party is again ahead in the polls – why is that?

Herbert Kickl has the right-wing populist one FPÖ in Austria brought back to the top of the polls. Reason enough for Jan Böhmermann to take a closer look at the party chairman. Kickl is someone “who doesn’t need Red Bull to get pumped up, but gets his kicks when he compares pension insurance policies online,” states “Böhmi” right at the beginning of his current “ZDF Magazin Royale” program.

Jan Böhmermann and “again and again” Austria and the FPÖ

Kickl has certainly never been invited to a party before, he jokes. But: “You can’t just pull out the Nazi club if you want to talk about Nazis,” said Böhmermann, as usual satirically. And so he will get by without a single Hitler comparison when he looks at Kickl. “Hitler managed it back then.” Unsurprisingly, of course, this doesn’t work.

And so he fades in an appearance by Kickl, in which the politician is introduced as the “future People’s Chancellor”. “Someone still called himself People’s Chancellor, true Adolf Hitler, until he wanted everyone to call him Führer,” says Böhmermann. Now he will certainly be accused again of waving the Nazi club, the satirist jokes. “Just because someone speaks like Goebbels doesn’t mean they’re Hitler,” he jokes.

Böhmermann doesn’t have much new to say about the FPÖ in his contribution. Why should it, when the party itself has everything that is questionable in its program? Remigration plans, for example, have been there since 2021. “And with something like that, the right-wing extremist FPÖ has come to first place in surveys,” he says. “For comparison: here in thoroughly anti-fascist Germany, the AFD is a distant second.”

FPÖ leader is a fan of the Identitarians

The fact that the concept of remigration is actually unconstitutional prompted the “ZDF Magazin Royale” team to ask the Austrian Ministry of the Interior. However, for investigative and data protection reasons, the request was not answered.

Böhmermann also refers to right-wing extremist identitarians who, according to Kickl, are “worth supporting”. Its boss, Martin S., received a donation from the later Christchurch attacker a few years ago, which is why the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution became aware of him. However, when the police wanted to search his apartment, S. let the officers stand in front of the door for 41 minutes and deleted his emails beforehand. However, this does not seem to dissuade Kickl from his enthusiasm for the Identitarians.

“If you let Nazis into power, they’ll do Nazi things, I would say now if (CDU leader) Friedrich Merz hadn’t banned me from using the Nazi club,” said Böhmermann. At the end of his broadcast, he returns to his hashtag of the week, “Always again” and sings his version of the FPÖ anthem “Always again Austria”. The text is unmistakable:

“This Liad is for the country that gets horny when it forgets what it used to be and what it will be again tomorrow! As long as the Russians find us, Austria will alone be the most neutral, largest empire in Eastern Europe! You too “If you remember like a goldfish in a pond, then don’t worry and stretch out your arm for our Austria.”
