Jamie Oliver’s new cookbook: five-ingredient recipes from the Mediterranean

Jamie Oliver’s wife Jools is a smart woman. It is thanks to her that “Jamie Oliver 5 Ingredients Mediterranean” is number one on the cookbook bestseller list in Germany. The book wasn’t even planned. Jamie Oliver had vowed not to return to old ground and reissue the record. But his wife’s persuasion taught him otherwise. She is said to have said that he should finally get all the other books out of his head. “That’s exactly what people want in these hectic times – it’s exactly the book that parents talk about at school.” She should be right.

Here it is, the 27th cookbook by the friendly British chef, bright orange with a plate of tomatoes and fried shrimp on the cover. The recipes come from the Mediterranean region, which covers at least 22 countries – and they are also a bit of a collection of Oliver’s lifelong travels. There are 125 recipes in the Oliver-Klopper, they are geographically widely spread. There is Israeli fattoush salad, Spanish gazpacho, Greek and Italian pasta or Turkish bulgur salad. In order to stay true to the five ingredients, Oliver is not above reaching for frozen vegetables.

For example, the fast-paced ratatouille risotto consists of mixed Mediterranean grilled vegetables from the freezer, rice, broth, basil and goat cheese. Ingredients such as olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper are part of the pantry and are required. Over half of the recipes are vegetarian, but fish and meat lovers will also get their money’s worth with this all-rounder cookbook. Oliver celebrates Mediterranean cuisine and breaks it down in a consumer-friendly way. Recipes with five ingredients that anyone can do. No wonder this cookbook is a bestseller.
