Jair Bolsonaro interviewed by the federal police on the riots of January 8

He arrived at the federal police premises in a vehicle with tinted windows and made no statement. Far-right ex-Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro began hearing on Wednesday morning about his role in the January 8 rampage by his supporters of places of power in Brasilia, a police source said.

On January 8, thousands of individuals refusing the defeat of Jair Bolsonaro stormed the Presidential Palace, the Congress and the Supreme Court in Brasilia, ransacking everything in their path. Some 1,800 people had been arrested.

Contestation of Lula’s victory

A Supreme Court judge had ordered in mid-April that Bolsonaro be heard, who was that day in Orlando, in the United States, and has always denied his involvement in these riots which occurred a week after the inauguration of the leftist head of state Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Returning to Brazil at the end of May from a three-month stay in the United States after his defeat against Lula, Bolsonaro had notably published a video on January 10, two days after the riots, contesting the results of Lula’s election.
