It’s the anniversary of the lockdown in Shanghai – you shouldn’t remember it

Last spring, the 25 million residents of Shanghai were under house arrest for two months. Many still think back to the drastic lockdown with horror. But the memory of it is systematically censored in China.

At first glance, it was a harmless little art exhibition that opened in downtown Shanghai on March 18. Under the title “Three Years, Three People”, paintings and photographs by three artists dealing with the era of the pandemic were shown. There was nothing scandalous about her works, they were quiet ink drawings, calligraphs and black-and-white photos that essentially depicted everyday life in Shanghai during the Corona years: faces with protective masks, queues in front of test centers, deserted streets.
