It’s official, Nintendo will present its next game console

Nintendo has confirmed the presentation of its new generation of consoles at the conclusion of its 2023-2024 fiscal year. However, you should not expect a release before 2025.

After years of rumors around a Nintendo Switch Pro, probably becoming the Nintendo Switch Oled, then months of speculation around a Nintendo Switch 2, the Japanese manufacturer is officially breaking its silence. As could be expected, it was at the conclusion of its 2023-2024 fiscal year, ending March 31, that the manufacturer wanted to officially communicate. Indeed, this is a presentation where the manufacturer also makes its projections for the following year, which will end in March 2025. It was therefore appropriate to reassure about the calendar.

When will the Nintendo Switch 2 be revealed?

It is by a message from the president of NintendoShuntaro Furukawa, that we learn more about the presentation of the next console from the Japanese manufacturer.

This is Furukawa, president of Nintendo. We will make an announcement regarding the Nintendo Switch successor this fiscal year. It’ll have been over nine years since we announced the Nintendo Switch in March 2015. We’ll be hosting a Nintendo Direct in June regarding the Nintendo Switch game lineup for the second half of 2024, but please be aware that there won’t be any mention of the successor to the Nintendo Switch during this presentation.

As you can read, we now know that the successor to the Nintendo Switch will be presented by March 2025, during this new fiscal year. However, the president of Nintendo specifies that there will be no mention of it during the Nintendo Direct in June, the one which is in some way synonymous with the E3 period, even if the show in question does not exist more. We will probably have to wait until the very end of 2024 or the very beginning of 2025 to learn more about this new console.

A first estimate of the release date

In the details of the presentation of financial results, Nintendo indicates having sold 15.7 million consoles between April 2023 and April 2024. The manufacturer predicts a drop of 14% in console sales over the next fiscal year, i.e. i.e. between April 2024 and April 2025. The brand also forecasts a drop in game sales from 199.67 million to 165 million, or -17.4% of sales.

We can reasonably estimate that counting on a drop in sales means that Nintendo does not intend to release its console during this period. We can therefore imagine that its next games console, which we think will be a Nintendo Switch 2, will not be released before April 2025.
