A 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Italy on Wednesday morning. The starting point of the earthquake was off the Adriatic coast. The Italian fire brigade did not have to deploy to any rescue operations.

A 5.7 magnitude earthquake in the Adriatic Sea shook the Marche region in central Italy on Wednesday morning. According to the Italian Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology, the earthquake occurred shortly after 7 a.m. at a depth of eight kilometers off the Italian Adriatic coast. A few minutes later there was a 4.0 magnitude aftershock. The tremors were felt in the capital, Rome.

Italian Fire Brigade: So far no requests for rescue operations

In many places, people ran into the streets in panic. “So far we have not received any requests for rescue operations or reports of damage,” the Italian fire brigade said on Twitter. As a precaution, however, schools were closed and trains canceled throughout the region, according to the regional authorities. Occasional photos and videos of damage are circulating on Twitter, for example at the Ancona train station.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s office said the head of government was in constant contact with the civil protection agency and the head of government for the Marche region.

The Eurasian and African tectonic plates meet in Italy, making the earthquake risk particularly high. In the summer of 2016, almost 300 people died in an earthquake in the Marche, Umbria and Lazio regions.
