Israel, apparently under pressure from the United States, has agreed to ceasefires to allow civilians to seek safety before the military operation against Hamas. The Israeli military plans to suspend its operations at alternating locations in the north of the Gaza Strip for four hours a day. According to White House national security spokesman John Kirby, the Israeli military will announce each four-hour window three hours in advance. Civilians could use the breaks to get food or medicine or to leave the northern coastal strip, where Israeli troops say they are fighting Hamas. It is not known for how long the agreement will apply.
