Israel: Alleged attack in Jerusalem – Politics

According to helpers, eight people were injured in a suspected attack in Jerusalem. According to initial findings, a 39-year-old Palestinian “deliberately hit several pedestrians” with a car, the Israeli police said on Monday.

The suspected attacker was shot dead by a civilian on the spot. Accordingly, it is a resident of East Jerusalem. The investigations continued. A 70-year-old was seriously injured, according to the Israeli rescue service Zaka. In addition, one woman was moderately injured and six others were slightly injured. The incident happened not far from the Machane Yehuda market, which is also popular with tourists. The place is near the main train station.

Soldiers’ Remembrance Day began in Israel in the evening and will transition into Independence Day on Tuesday evening. The country is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in Jerusalem: “This terrorist attack, in this place, at this time, reminds us that the State of Israel was acquired through many trials and tribulations.” The aim of the assassins is to conquer and uproot the people of Israel. “If they could, they would murder us all. But they will not defeat us; we will defeat them.”

Just a few hours earlier, the Israeli army killed a Palestinian during a raid in the occupied West Bank, according to Palestinian sources. One man was shot dead by the soldiers and three other men were injured, the Jericho authorities said, according to the Palestinian news agency Wafa.

The Israeli military said soldiers had arrested a suspected extremist in the refugee camp in Akabat Jabr near Jericho and shot at two suspects who were escaping. At least one of them was hit.

The security situation in Israel and the Palestinian territories has long been tense. Since the beginning of the year, 17 Israelis, one Italian and one Ukrainian have been killed in attacks. In the same period, 96 Palestinians lost their lives – they were shot in clashes with the Israeli army or after their own attacks. Israel conquered the West Bank and East Jerusalem in 1967. More than 600,000 Israeli settlers live there today. The Palestinians claim the territories for their own state.
