Ismaning – cultural festival in the castle park – district of Munich

From the point of view of the Munich Transport and Tariff Association, Ismaning, in contrast to the neighboring municipality of Unterföhring, is no longer part of the urban M-Zone, but that does not mean that fox and rabbit say good night here. On the contrary: The former “Krautdorf” is not only a nationally relevant media location, but also a lively community with around 18,000 inhabitants and a cultural hotspot. In this respect, the castle park with the Kallmann Museum, the gallery in the castle pavilion and the castle museum is particularly impressive. And there’s a lot going on there this weekend: “The cultural institutions in our community are presenting three very special days in the Ismaning Castle Park. Our historic castle complex offers an extraordinary backdrop for this,” praises Mayor Alexander Greulich (SPD) at the Ismaninger Kulturfest.

It starts this Friday, September 9th. Museums and galleries are open from 2.30 p.m. with free admission, and the culinary and musical offerings start at 5 p.m.: Matthias Well (violin) and Vladislav Cojocaru (accordion) from the Ismaning Music School will play at the start. The catering takes place at various locations in the park – the range extends from Bavarian burgers and Swabian Maultaschen to crêpes and sweet waffles on a stick. Of course, the range of drinks also includes top- and bottom-fermented products of local provenance: there is Ismaninger Helles, Ismaninger Weißbier and Ismaninger Festbier. From 6 p.m. onwards, the focus is on the gallery in the palace pavilion, which is currently celebrating its 40th anniversary with an anniversary exhibition. At 8 p.m., the Ismaninger Brass Ensemble takes over the musical design. The end of the event is scheduled for 11 p.m.

On Saturday noon we continue at noon. Particularly interesting: from 1pm to 5pm, the historic halls in the castle, which today functions as the town hall, are open for viewing. From 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. there is also a games program for children aged 5 and over on the lawn in front of the palace pavilion.

“We are planning for nice weather. It will not rain for three days now.”

At 3 p.m. the exhibition “Eye to eye with the ducal family von Leuchtenberg” will open in the Ismaning Castle Museum. Printed graphics and historical costumes can be seen there. The Leuchtenbergs are closely linked to the history of the place: it was Napoleon’s stepson Eugène de Beauharnais who, with his wife Auguste Amalie, bought the Ismaninger Castle in 1816 and a year later received the title “Duke of Leuchtenberg” from the Bavarian King Maximilian I Joseph. The exhibits come from the Graphic Collection Helmut Friedl from Pfreimd (like Ismaning, a place where the Leuchtenbergs left their mark) and are supplemented with historical costumes by Nathalie Harran from the Atelier La Dame d’Atours. “True to her motto ‘To talk about clothes is to tell a story’, the French historian and costume designer Nathalie Harran presents a collection of her costumes and accessories specially tailored to Ismaning,” explains Christine Heinz, director of the palace museum. Helmut Friedl and Madame Harran will be present at the opening of the exhibition.

Nathalie Harran shows a collection of her historical costumes and accessories (here “Robe Noir”) in the castle museum.

From 4 p.m. onwards you can observe how art is currently being created: Veronika Schattenmann presents a painting performance in front of the palace pavilion. From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. there will be music in the park with Alosha Uysal (saxophone) and Simon Harscheidt (guitar) from the local music school.

Of course, the success of such a festival also depends on the weather and the prospects are not too sunny. “We are planning for nice weather. It will not rain for three days now,” says Christa Scharl from the municipal administration. Of course, that doesn’t mean that you don’t have possible rain on the screen. Events could be moved to the museums at short notice. And if necessary, you have to improvise at short notice and the visitors have to take shelter. In general, she expects a positive response: “The festival is usually well received. And the visitors are distributed quite well over the three days.”

Of course, a sunny time window would be desirable, especially on Sunday mornings, when the Weißwurst breakfast takes place from 11 a.m. with musical and cultural accompaniment by “Boarisch Kraut” and the Ismaninger Goaßlschnalzer. Otherwise, visitors can visit the historic halls in the castle again on Sunday, there is a museum rally for children between the ages of six and ten, and there will also be stilt walkers in the castle park. This time, the honoring of the community for special merits in the Hainhalle, which begins at 1 p.m., is also embedded in the cultural festival. From 3 p.m. onwards, those responsible for the Kallmann Museum, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and which is undergoing various renovations, will also be taking a “look into the future of the museum”. The formidable exhibition “Kaleidoscope Expressionism” can currently be seen there. At around 6 p.m., the Ismaninger wind orchestra begins to play the musical finale, and the cultural festival is supposed to end at around 10 p.m. The party-loving people of Ismaning can then slowly start to say good night to each other.
