Isar flickering on the Praterinsel: Munich has a new Isar beach – Munich

The city in summer is a different way of life. A freer, more enjoyable, one that lets all fives be straighter. The beer gardens and terraces, the lake and Isar banks fill up with sun-seekers. There can never be enough beautiful places to enjoy the weather. And so it is welcome that a new beach on the Isar has opened opposite the Praterinsel.

Although the beach here might arouse false expectations; There is no sand. The “Isar flickering”, as it is called, is more of a garden. The tables, deck chairs and sandbags are in the grass. Right next to the Praterwehrbrücke, Steinsdorfstraße in the back, view of the Praterinsel. With a beer after work, you can watch the commuter traffic on the Isar-Radl-Highway on the one hand, and the evening sun on the island’s buildings on the other.

Alexander Uhl and Tobias Fendt, who organize various gastro events together, are behind the project. An idea, many visits to the authorities and applications later, they celebrated the opening of their Isar flickering on May 20th. They brought the “Blaue Libelle” wine bar and the “Krake” cocktail bar on board; each bringing their core competencies to the river bank at their own stand.

Part of the garden is furnished with tavern terrace tables and chairs. Practical for eating the hot dogs (there is a classic version and a vegan version, 9.50 euros), pinsa (12.50 euros) or tarte flambée (10.50 euros). All options are a solid base to have another beer (EUR 4.50), a spritz (EUR 8.50) or the specially created “Isar flicker” with Alpine herb syrup, Prosecco, tonic, ginger and lemon (EUR 8.50). to fetch, or to walk to the Blue Dragonfly or the Octopus. How much is going on at the beach depends very much on the day of the week and, above all, on the weather: A boring Tuesday with steel-grey clouds will only attract a few guests and small groups; the neighbors who drink their evening beer here instead of in the apartment, the family who wanted to get out or a group of friends who have arranged to meet up for a glass of wine after work.

On a warm evening, all tables and chairs are usually occupied.

A beautiful, warm summer evening, on the other hand, fills the tables. Then the guests sit as long as they can, at 10 p.m. it’s over because of the residents, the fairy lights shine, the disco balls glitter in the DJ booth. Music plays depending on the DJ, it can be Latin American songs or electronic-melodic beats. It gets really crowded at the concerts: Wiesn bands play, Roland Hefter performs on August 4, but the choirs and school bands in the program are also well received: “We mainly book people from Munich for people from Munich,” says Uhl. There is also a yoga class almost every day on the beach for those who want to fight the hangover they acquired there with the downward-facing dog. There will be a children’s program again during the holidays.

Whether the Isar flickering will continue next year remains to be seen in the stars that become visible over the Praterinsel late in the evening. Depends on how the neighbors react, what the city says and on the annual planning of the initiators. So it is better to enjoy the beach on a nice day this year. As long as this very special attitude towards life hangs over the city.
