Does a sequel to “Sherlock” fail mainly because of its two stars?

“Sherlock” creator Steven Moffat would be willing to continue the BBC series in an instant, but there’s a stumbling block.
It has been almost six years since the last episode of the extremely popular crime series “Sherlock” flickered across the British BBC screens. Since the previous series finale “The Last Problem” on January 15, 2017, viewers and fans have wanted Benedict Cumberbatch (46) and Martin Freeman (51) to return as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. watson Steven Moffat (61), the co-creator of “Sherlock”, has now again confirmed that he would continue the series immediately. According to Deadline, Moffat explainedthat he would “start writing” new episodes “tomorrow” when stars Cumberbatch and Freeman are ready to return to their iconic roles.

However, the biggest obstacle to continuing the crime and mystery series seems to be the huge success and the associated full shooting schedule of the two main actors Cumberbatch and Freeman. As early as April 2022, “Sherlock” creator Moffat emphasizedthat the two stars “were very loyal to the series over a long period of time when [‘Sherlock’] definitely became her worst-paid job”. And Moffat’s new statements regarding the future of the show also go in this direction. “They do bigger and better things, but, Martin and Benedict, please come back,” said the series creator jokingly. That sounds unfortunately not after an early continuation of the successful series around master detective Sherlock Holmes.
