Is “High Mass for Toni” worth it?

At the crime scene yesterday (June 4th, 2023) from Franconia, Voss and Ringelhahn have to solve the murder of a pastor. For the detective, the case becomes very personal. Is “High Mass for Toni” worth it?

Storyline: The scene of the crime yesterday (June 4th, 2023) from Franconia in a quick check

After years without contact, Chief Inspector Felix Voss (Fabian Hinrichs) is surprisingly called by his old friend Marcus Borchert (Pirmin Sedlmeier), who is now a pastor. Marcus invites Felix to the Sunday sermon. He wants to reveal something about Antonia Hentschel (Sina Martens). Antonia, called Toni, was Felix’ great love during his student days in Berlin. But the sermon never comes: Marcus is found murdered shortly beforehand.

Felix learns at the scene of the crime that Toni took his own life two years ago. The local police suspects that Marcus’s murder was a robbery. But Felix thinks there is a connection between Toni’s death and Marcus’ death. Despite all resistance and against the official regulations, Felix Voss and Paula Ringelhahn (Dagmar Manzel) begin to investigate in the nearby Upper Palatinate and in the process penetrate further and further into the abyss of the extremely wealthy Hentschel industrial family.

Tatort criticism: is it worth tuning in to “Hochamt für Toni”?

In beautiful pictures, the crime scene told yesterday from Franconia about old love and gray everyday life, about the narrowness of family tradition, about moral flights of fancy and deep abysses. The director of his first Tatort was Michael Krummenacher from Switzerland, who was most recently successful in cinemas with the remake of “Der Räuber Hotzenplotz”.

“Hochamt für Toni” wasn’t so much a thriller as it was a melodrama and character study about its main character, Inspector Felix Voss, who is thrown into a very personal case. The big catch is that none of this is really exciting. The script has too many weaknesses for that, writes Andreas Frei in our crime scene column. You can read the collected crime scene criticism of “Hochamt für Toni” in the press reviews (“tension and depth”).

Crime Scene Detectives: Voss and Ringelhahn are the investigators in Franconia

Fabian Hinrichs, alias Chief Inspector Felix Voss, was transferred to Nuremberg in 2015 and took over the management of the Franken Homicide Squad. There he meets Chief Inspector Paula Ringelhahn, played by Dagmar Manzel, who has been a member of the Nuremberg Criminal Police Office for many years and is now moving to the new nationwide homicide squad with Voss. The two are supported by colleagues Wanda Goldwasser, Michael Schatz and Sebastian Fleischer.

Felix Voss grew up in Itzehoe at the end of the 1970s and was brought up by his mother according to strict moral rules. Much of his life remains a mystery. His father, whom he met shortly before his death, is never mentioned. And why he dropped out of a promising law degree, bogged down in the techno scene for months and then decided on a career in the police force is also never explained.

In his investigations, Voss, who is usually in a good mood, shows determination, but also often unusual empathy. His colleague Paula Ringelhahn is completely different. She comes from East Germany, but the desire for democracy and freedom draws her to the West. The chief inspector is a provocative investigator whose loose tongue sometimes poses a real threat.

The crime scene lures millions in front of the television every Sunday. But who actually investigates where? These commissioners or teams are currently on TV.
