Amazon strengthens his tablet. Two years after a first version of its Fire HD 10, the webmarket renews its offer with a digital slate that wants to offer a little more for a price that is always contained: from 149 euros (in 32 GB and with advertising each time it is switched on) . As the first departures on vacation loom, is this tablet a good opportunity for entertainment this summer?
True display quality
No surprise: the Fire HD 10 looks like a regular tablet. If it is a bit heavy (465 g), the Fire HD 10 does not cheap. Full HD (1920 x 1200 pixels for 224 ppi), its 10.1-inch screen is LCD and not OLED, but its display quality is true, with decent viewing angles.
A good point for children who will be able to watch their cartoons downloaded on Prime Video together in the back seat during the summer migrations! However, we regret that the black borders surrounding the screen are still so wide. They give the impression that this type of product is still struggling to evolve, if not at the margin.
More resistant than the iPad
In reinforced aluminum silicate glass, the screen of the Fire HD 10 would be 1.7 times more resistant than “that of the last iPad”, according to Amazon. An impossible statement to verify and which obviously aims to reassure customers. Still, the tablet, like its sisters, is not protected against humidity. We will therefore be careful around the pool.
New: it is possible to separate the screen display into two parts to, for example, monitor social networks while playing. A feature that has been around for a while at Apple, but now enabled by Fire OS, Amazon’s home operating system.
The privileged sound
Appreciable: the sound is not the poor child of the Fire HD 10. Compatible with Dolby Atmos, the slate is equipped with two speakers located on the top. The stereo, airy enough, is credible up to 2/3 of the maximum volume.
The general sound rendering remains however and logically quite acute. Making resistance, a mini-jack will accommodate a wired headset in addition to a Bluetooth headset.
Video limitations
Please note, this tablet is not compatible with all video applications in streaming. Agreements (or lack of agreements!) Oblige, the Fire HD 10 does receive Prime Video, Netflix, Disney + or Molotov. TV, but not MyTF1, 6play, myCanal, france.tv, nor RMC Sport. Too bad for the sports competitions in the summer of 2021 …
Stranger, the Fire HD 10 is not compatible with Audible, the audiobook platform which however belongs to Amazon. A gap, while audio books can also be discovered and appreciated on the road to vacation. Conversely, the Fire HD 10 allows you to access the Amazon Kindle library and find on your account all the books previously purchased for a Kindle reader.
Rare technical developments
The device, delivered in a cardboard box, advances ecological arguments. 96% of its packaging would come from sustainably managed forests or recycling channels and 28% of the plastics used in the manufacture of the tablet would be recycled. Designed to be versatile, the Fire HD 10 is powered by an octa-core processor clocked at 2 GHz with 3 Gb of Ram. It is a very timid evolution compared to its predecessor launched in 2019 which offered 2 Gb of Ram… The players could however appreciate.
Another small evolution for the memory of the slate: 32 GB or 64 GB depending on the model, but with the possibility of extension up to 1 TB, against 512 GB previously… Under its glass ceiling, the autonomy of the Fire HD 10 remains identical to that of its big sister: up to 12 hours. Almost figuring out, cameras (5 megapixels at the back filming in Full HD and 2 megapixels at the front filming in 720p) may be useful sparingly, but certainly not for bringing back photos or selfies canons of its summer, a task that will remain devolved to a good smartphone.
