Freedom at 17? In any case, that of traveling by car. On June 20, Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne announced that it would be possible “to take a driving license from the age of 17, and to drive alone at 17”. Until now, minors could drive accompanied but it was impossible to obtain a license before turning 18.
The measure must come into force on January 1, 2024. The head of government also promised aid of 500 euros, paid to apprentices to finance their license. According to the minister, this measure will facilitate the mobility of young people, and allow them to gain independence. The measure, however, is not unanimous. Several associations fear an increase in accidents and risky driving on the road.
