Iran launched a drone attack against Israel “from its territory” on Saturday, the spokesperson for the Israeli army said in a televised address. “We are monitoring the threat in the airspace. This is a threat that will take several hours to reach the territory of the State of Israel,” added Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari.
Israel, like Iraq and Jordan, closed their airspace following the announcement of this attack, confirmed in Iran by the Revolutionary Guards.
The United States on alert
Iran’s drone attack on Israel will “probably” last “several hours”, estimated the White House, reiterating the support of the United States for the “people of Israel”. Adrienne Watson, spokesperson for the US National Security Council, issued a statement saying that the United States will continue to support the “defense” of Israel against “these threats from Iran”.
“We are working closely with the United States and our partners in the region to act against the launches and intercept them,” Rear Admiral Hagari said.
Tension and escalation
Just before this announcement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu assured that his country had prepared for “the possibility of a direct attack by Iran” and was “ready to face any scenario, as long as in terms of defense rather than attack.
Iran has vowed to “punish” Israel after an April 1 strike on its consulate in Damascus that cost the lives of two Revolutionary Guard generals. Tehran accused Israel, which neither confirmed nor denied.
