iPad Air 5: Apple equips the lightweight with professional performance and 5G

The iPad Air 5 now also comes with an M1 chip. This significantly increases performance.

The Apple iPad Air 5 has switched to the M1 chip – and mutated into a super-light iPad Pro. There is also a new camera and the iPad Air now also transmits at 5G speed.

After Apple presented the iPad Pro, the iPad Air now also has its own M1 chipset. The tablet thus gains a lot in performance without having to sacrifice the slim form factor. The iPad Air’s M1 chip is a whopping 60 percent faster than the A14 that powers the previous model. The distance to the iPad Pro is shrinking a good bit, but both tablets still have their right to exist.

Differences to the iPad Pro

The iPad Pro, for example, is characterized by the large Pro Motion display with “XDR technology”. With the iPad Air, Apple relies on a 10.9-inch “Liquid Retina Display”, which means it offers less work space and slightly less performance for professional applications. The resolution is 2360 x 1640 pixels at 264 ppi. Apple specifies the brightness as 500 nits, also far less than the iPad Pro, but probably perfectly sufficient for everyday use.

Theoretically, the iPad Air is now a fully-fledged laptop replacement – of course, the corresponding accessories should not be missing.

With the M1 chip, the iPad Air is now also completely suitable as a computer replacement, the difference between the models is probably comparable to that of the MacBook series Pro and Air. While the Pro stands for uncompromising performance and at the corresponding price offers everything that Apple has to offer at the time of the presentation, the Air ranks more as a light everyday companion with enough power and endurance for most everyday tasks. In addition, it costs less. The memory is either 64 or 256 gigabytes.

In addition to the new chipset, the new iPad Air 5 also offers a 5G modem for fast mobile Internet and a revised selfie camera with support for “Center Stage”, i.e. video recordings in which the camera follows you without you having to hold the device by hand have to move. The resolution is 12 megapixels.

Prices start from 679 euros

The iPad Air 5 is priced at 679 euros for the 64 gigabyte version and 849 euros for the 256 gigabyte tablet. If you choose the large iPad Air with 5G modem, the bill will be 1019 euros. Apple will accept pre-orders starting next Friday, and the first copies will be available on March 18. If you want to use the iPad Air as a laptop replacement with a keyboard, you have to pay 339 euros for the Magic Keyboard with trackpad.
