No one in contemporary German-language literature writes as vividly about rural life as the Austrian writer Reinhard Kaiser-Mühlecker. His novels regularly end up on the best lists and have received numerous awards, and his reading trips take him to Tokyo and New York. For several years now, the writer, who is also a trained farmer, has been running his parents’ farm in the Upper Austrian foothills of the Alps, not far from Thomas Bernhard’s birthplace. No one in the world of high culture was likely to notice the alienation between the farmers and their political representatives as directly as he did.
