Interview with Raphaela Gromes: cellist – and feminist

Raphaela Gromes combed the history of music for female composers who were discriminated against. This is how the album “Femmes” came into being, her greatest success so far. In the interview she talks about her beginnings as a cellist – and why a feminist view of the material of classical music is needed.

You are regarded as the most successful German cellist, your current album “Femmes” even made it into the pop charts. Were you born with the cello?
Nearly! My parents were both cellists and performed as a duo. Funnily enough, they thought it would be better for me to learn another instrument, first the piano, then the violin. But I really wanted to be a cellist. When I was four, my first cello was finally under the Christmas tree.
