Interview with Meron Mendel on the Documenta scandal – culture

He was supposed to help Documenta deal with its anti-Semitism scandal, but then he never heard from Kassel again. A conversation with Meron Mendel, director of the Anne Frank educational institution.

Interviewed by

Jörg Haentzschel

Talking about anti-Semitism is Meron Mendel’s job. The scientist, who was born in Tel Aviv in 1976, has been head of the Anne Frank educational center in Frankfurt since 2010, where he sensitizes young people and adults to the topic. So it was only natural that Documenta Director General Sabine Schormann asked him for help when anti-Semitic drawings were discovered on the Taring Padi collective’s “People’s Justice” banner. Mendel was happy to do so. But then he never heard from her again. Mendel stated on Friday, he is no longer available as a consultant for the Documenta. We spoke to him on Saturday.
