Anne Rice made her breakthrough with her debut – in 1976 her “Interview with a Vampire” was published. Many bestsellers followed. Now Rice has died at the age of 80, as her son announced.
The US writer Anne Rice is dead. His mother died as a result of a stroke, wrote Christopher Rice on Twitter and Facebook. She was surrounded by her family at the bedside. According to her son, he “sat next to her hospital bed in awe of her achievements and her courage.”
Rice is slated to be buried at a private ceremony in the family mausoleum in New Orleans. Her son did not mention an appointment. However, he announced that there will be a public celebration in memory of his mother in the coming year.
Breakthrough with “Interview with a Vampire”
Anne Rice was known for the novel “Interview with a Vampire”, which was filmed in 1994 with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. Her first novel in 1976 became a bestseller. In the tragic story of the vampire child Claudia, who cannot grow up, she comes to terms with the early death of her daughter Michele, who had died of leukemia.
The worldwide success of the book prompted Rice to write more vampire novels. Her “Chronicle of the Vampires” comprises a total of twelve volumes. She also wrote a witch saga – “Lives of the Mayfair Witches”. At times she also dealt with Christian topics.
Born into an Irish Catholic family, Rice wrote various erotic novels under the pseudonyms Anne Rampling, A. Roquelaure and AN Roquelaure. In total, Rice’s books sold around 150 million times.
